Tube fly Tying
Nubby tubes

These fantastic tubes are fantastic for two reasons. Though originally designed fro creating a fly with the convenience of a bead head, we found that they are superb for making Scandinavian style tube flies.

Technique 1: You simply tye on your pattern and leave the "Nub" at the end to create your own tube with an extra punch of weight at the front. A super solution to solving hook "hang down".

Technique 2: If you tie on the plastic liner tube that is insereted in the metal component (like you would do with a Shumakov tube) the ball on the end stabalizes the wing and hackle of the fly. It essentially gives the wing and hackle a propped up effect that allows the fly to keep a great deal of its bulk when in a current.

They come in 2 sizes (22mm and 15mm) and four types, brass, copper, gunsmoke, and silver.

These Nubby Tubes were tyed with the "Nub" exposed. This gives the fly the look of a bead head. We like to dip some of the "nubbs" in our custom Powder Paint to give them a coloured head.

These tubes were tied in the Scandinavian style. All tying is done on the plastic liner. The "Nub" acts as a prop that holds the shape and silhouette of the wing an hackle while being fished in a current. You end up with a large profile fly that is well balance (no "Hook Hangdown") and has a nice neat head.
